On a recent afternoon, after visiting Erwin Wurm’s exhibition at Vienna’s Albertina Modern, I had a random street photography moment that led me to a meaningful realization. You may know Wurm's chubby red Porsche or other warped sculptures that hold a funhouse mirror to the Western way of life. While his work often looks cartoony, it carries a sobering message. We have a tendency to overconsume and as a result, it's consuming us. A pattern that is mirrored by the relentlessly advancing machines we build. But what's the role of humans in this construct?

Just as I stepped outside, a skateboarder was taking a moment to focus before tail-sliding one of the rock planters in front of the museum. Although I'm not a particularly talented skater, I became fairly absorbed by the culture during my teens in the 2000s, and over time, recognized the greater significance behind the inherent philosophy. It's not about thriving despite constraints, but rather to fully embrace them as opportunities. To me, this concept feels a lot like an echo from the Renaissance era.

With the accelerating AI boom, it seems like every solution is only a prompt away, diminishing the perceived significance of the individual. A dilution of the very abilities we previously thought of as untouchable. Similar to the idea that a monkey with a typewriter and infinite time could eventually recreate Shakespeare’s works through sheer probability. But isn't that ultimately one of the most central questions of the human experience — who is really in control?

Erwin Wurm’s work highlights the appeal of power and how it can distort our perception. We live in this discrepancy of urges, consciousness, and the increasingly complex layers of communication in between. With more information comes more noise, and it might appear like we're losing ourselves, which is not surprising, given that our cognitive hardware predates modern civilization by roughly 100,000 years.

I believe that we're at a tipping point, where we have to be more aware about our intuitions, while fully embracing progress and the knowledge we've built. The concept of AI is nothing new. It has been in the making for decades, but we're in the sweet spot of applications and infrastructure. Each project I undertake reinforces my understanding that we’re already well into the age of symbiosis, and the potential continues to grow exponentially.

Which brings me back to the original message. In a time of synthesized thoughts, our strongest asset is our consciousness. On the grand scale, as a species, but also as individuals, the machine we have created carries significant weight and the respective inertia. It seems improbable that it would simply stop, and perhaps that's just part of the fundamental flow of the universe. But wherever things are moving, the reality we perceive only happens in each and every one of our minds. Acknowledging this is essential, since the key to our awareness is present in every moment.
