Audi Urban Mobility: Baby Seat & Carrier

The Audi Armadillo Seat concept was created during the 2011 industrial design (ID2) semester at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna in a partnership with Audi Konzept Design Munich.

Modern cars are built for maximum safety with a combination of active and passive technologies that protect the life of passengers. While most features are optimized for adults, babies and toddlers are more fragile and require an extra layer of protection. Seats with five-point harnesses are reasonably effective in securing the baby's body, but there are no specialized active systems to reduce the impact during a crash.

We drew our inspiration from the armadillo that quickly rolls up into a ball when in danger, protecting its soft belly behind tough backplates. The outer shell is made out of a lightweight but stiff polymer in combination with a shock-cushioning impact liner. In the event of a crash, kinetic energy is absorbed by the multi-layer body while an active canopy is deployed to shield the small passenger from glass and shreds.

The seat is Isofix compatible for easy removal and doubles as a carrier. When attached to the undercarriage, the carrier transforms into an elegant stroller with concealed compartments and all-wheel suspension.
