The EXTU concept was created during the 2011/12 industrial design (ID2) semester at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna.
Cameras have a long history of pushing technological limits to capture the perfect moment in time. Since the digital age, photo and video are increasingly converging, with most interchangeable lens cameras offering proficient hybrid capabilities. But how can we make video cameras easier to operate in different environments while still achieving professional image quality?
With enough buffer for setup time and budget, rigging a camera is a standard procedure in film making. In the growing market for indie creators, the requirements call for a more efficient setup. The EXTU camera system is intended to bridge this gap by combining the rugged nature of action cams with the performance of a professional system.
The components are modular, with the main unit acting as a handle with controls and monitoring capabilities, while each lens unit comes with its own image sensor and can run completely detached. In the standard configuration, a hinge allows the attached lens unit to swivel for a more ergonomic Super-8-style configuration. The battery packs connect to either body or lens unit and can be stacked to extend recording times. Operators can run the lens wirelessly from mounts, while still controlling image parameters, adjusting focus and even recording multiple angles at the same time.
Storytelling happens in the moment, which is why the EXTU system is designed for the elements to always be at hand. A key aspect of each lens unit is the sealed coupling with the sensor, enabling hot-swaps in all conditions. Off the field, the unit can be easily disassembled for upgrades. The same idea applies to body, batteries and accessories. In a fast-paced industry, a repair-friendly design is crucial for creators. Replacing outdated components is not just a necessity for professionals who rely on the best possible quality of their tools, but also an effective way to reduce waste. Preserving an environment worth capturing.
